As is shown in the drawing, an aged man is burying a huge thread-bound Chinese
book  entitled  Traditional  Culture  which  has  a  unique  national  style.  Hunching  his
back  and  raising  his  hands,  the  weak  old  man  is  hammering  a  cross  onto  the  huge
book. The caption indicates: “ The buried traditional culture”.
The  traditional  Chinese  culture  is  not  only  certain  to  survive,  but,  in  fact,  is
destined  to  thrive  and  prosper.  To  begin  with,  one  factor  that  has  already  begun  to
contribute to the preservation of  China’s traditional culture  is  its commercialization.
Since China’s opening-up to the outside world, China’s acrobatic and Beijing Opera
troupes as well as other branches of the  Chinese traditional culture have emerged as
burgeoning  tourist  industries.  In  addition,  another  reason  that  the  future  of  China’s
ancient culture can be considered “safe” is the active efforts to protect it on the part of

the Chinese government.  Traditional arts, such as calligraphy, dance and music,  are
often taught as a mandatory element of young children’s education, ensuring that they

thing,  this  is  very  important  in  developing  a  sense  of  local  identity  and  civic
continuity,  and in maintaining the  community spirit.  For another, the economy may
rise and fall, but a strong feeling of  being part  of a distinct culture  is timeless, and

It  is  illustrated  in  the  picture  that  two  men  behave  totally  differently  when
encountering with difficulties and adversities. Disappointed and dismayed in front of
the huge Chinese character “difficulty”, an idle man is just sitting still, doing nothing
but  moaning  all  day,  while  the  other  try  and  exert  his  strength  to  climb  over  the
seemingly insurmountable mountain.  And below the portrayal, there is a topic which
says: “in the face of difficulties”.
The purpose of the cartoon is to tell us that  adversity  is a means of strengthening
the mind and soul. For one thing, sustaining hardship can lead one to a new direction
in  life  or  even  a  higher  calling.  To  demonstrate,  in  1993,  J.  K.  Rowling  was
unemployed, suffering from clinical depression, and had contemplated suicide. It was
in this state of despair that she conceived the first rudiments of what later became the
best-selling  Harry  Potter  series.  For  another,  suffering  challenges  can  also  teach
people to be happier and to live life to the fullest. Survivors of deadly natural disasters,
for instance, will be thankful to have escaped with their lives.
Accordingly,  undergoing  adversities  encourages  people  to  learn  wisdom,
humanity, and self-reliance, and is a vital and unavoidable aspect of any individual’s
development  of  character  and  competence.  Just  as  the  world  famous  German
philosopher  Friedrich  Nietzsche  wrote  in  his  Twilight  of  the  Idols,  “What  does  not
destroy me, makes me stronger”. (234 words)

风险与机遇并存
As  is  depicted  in  the  cartoon,  a  certain  enterprise  is  fishing  successfully  in  the
ocean  of  financial  tsunami.  In  the  face  of  huge  waves,  the  person  in  charge  of  the
enterprise seems to be extremely enjoying fishing in such a horrible circumstances.
We are informed that “Opportunity and risk coexist”.
What account for the opportunities  that each of us has in our lives? This question
is likely to elicit a  variety of responses. To begin with, in addition to  the element of
chance,  a  large  part  of  opportunity  stems  from  individual  attitudes  and  mindsets.
Opportunities  often exist all  around us, waiting for those with the courage and enterprise to
seize them. What is more, many of our opportunities are the result of hard work and perseverance.
A  perfect  example  is  Olympic  athletes.  Many  Olympians  are  born  with  superior  physiques.

As can be seen from the above bar chart, money value of annual global electronic
commerce  transactions  is  increasing  gradually  during  the  15  years.  In  1997,  it  is
almost  2 billion dollars,  while the number reached  90 billion  in  2005.  By  2011,  the
number jumped dramatically to 300 billion dollars, 150 times than that of 1997.
Why  is  electronic  commerce  booming  nowadays?  Several  causes  contribute  to
this phenomenon. Above all, the availability of  computer is the foremost cause and
the rapid development of information technology  enables everybody to have access to
computer  and  Internet.    Nowadays,  Internet  is  no  longer  a  stranger  to  common
people.  What  is  more,  the  Internet  technology  is  becoming  increasingly  mature.
People  who  at  first  do  not  trust  business  transactions  on  Internet  now  become
convinced that  doing business on web is extremely convenient and effective. Last but
not least, electronic commerce is the fastest way so far to make transactions across far
distance.  It  makes  it  possible  to  do  business  at  home  and  it  saves  time  and
unnecessary formalities as well. That is why it is preferable to traditional commerce.
The booming  electronic  commerce  undoubtedly  contributes to the prosperity of
world economy and it also gives birth to  SOHO, a special group of people working at
home. The trend towards a promising e-commerce is inevitable. Accordingly, let’s get

第一段：Since  1990,  China  has  witnessed  a  great  change  in  the  ownership  of
houses.  As the chart shows, the percentage of  state-owned houses in a certain city in
China decreased considerably, dropping from  75% in  1990 to  20% in  2010, while the
corresponding figures for  private houses  increased dramatically, rising from  25%  to
80% over the same period.
第二段：The rise and fall can be accounted for by a couple of factors. For one
thing, the boom of the urban economy has resulted in the increase of family income
and the improvement of family economic conditions has led to the changes of people’
s  minds.  Nowadays,  hire  purchase  or  installment  plan  has  found  its  growing
popularity and acceptance. These have promoted the purchase of  private houses.  For

expensive, and therefore  less attainable. Furthermore, if one buys a house, it is likely
that he will be able to sell it at a reasonable  profit in the future. Accordingly, the increase in
house ownership is acceptable for both the authority and individuals, which should be encouraged.
