At Sackler Laboratory for Astrophysics (http://home.strw.leidenuniv.nl/~linnartz/start.html)Leiden Observatory, Leiden University, led by Prof. dr. H. Linnartz, there
is an opening for a PhD student working on precision mid-infrared
spectroscopic studies of interstellar species.
The mail goal of this project is to spectroscopically identify transitions
of molecules of astrophysical interest, detectable by our astronomical
flagship facilities like HIFI/Herschel, SOFIA, ALMA, but currently
inaccessible because of a lack of spectroscopic data. A setup capable of
doing so has recently been constructed in Leiden on a SRON/NWO project and a
very sophisticated mid-IR-OPO laser system (NWO-M) is available to study
molecular transients of astrophysical relevance in the mid-infrared. A
special plasma expansion is used to generate these species at low final
rotational temperatures, simulating the interstellar medium. Spectra are
recorded using cavity ring down spectroscopy, an ultra sensitive direct
absorption technique based on light confinement in a high finesse optical
cavity.
The PhD position is funded with full salary for 4 years and the candidate
will have an employee status. Salary will be up to a maximum of 2,636 euro
gross per month in the 4th year; income tax needs to be paid. Salary is
supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8,33%
.
This position will keep opening until it is filled, but preferably before
September 2013.
